The studio

Fieldwork is a small garden design studio in Melbourne. We draw on site, plant for the soil you have and stay around for the seasons after, because that is when a garden becomes yours.
How we workMost of our work happens outside, on the lawn, with a sketchbook.

01
The best brief comes from walking the garden with you: where the light falls, what you use and what you would change.

02
A garden should suit the time you have. We plan the upkeep along with the planting.

03
Gardens grow and households change. We draw structure that lasts and planting that can shift.
A garden is never finished on the day the landscaper leaves. The first two years decide how it settles, so we plan for them from the start.
We keep the studio small on purpose. The person who walks your garden is the person who draws it and the person who comes back to check on it.
And we write everything down: the plan, the plant list and a care sheet in plain words, so the garden can be looked after by anyone.

01
The designer who visits is the one who draws your garden and comes back to check on it.
02
Plans, a planting schedule and notes a landscaper can price without guessing.
03
A care sheet written for your garden, and visits in the first two years when it needs them.
Plants we come back to, because they suit Melbourne gardens: Westringia, Lomandra, Poa, Correa, Salvia, Nepeta, Pennisetum, Olea, Leucadendron, Acacia cognata, Banksia, Grevillea.
